The reality is that rivers, dams, (man-made or natural), seas, oceans, and even the water from your household tap are fast becoming contaminated and unhealthy.

Humanity has done a fine job of polluting one of our vital sources of life.

We are no strangers to the irrefutable fact that good water is probably our most precious and scarcest commodities. The growth of the bottled/packaged water industry is thus no surprise, but not all water is equal.  Actually, all water is created equal but finds itself unequal due to the terrain where it flows and the exterior interventions, whether deliberate or spontaneous.

There are several types of water:

Tap water

Government and Industry regulations are intended to keep this water safe and free from contaminants but, in truth, tests have shown that undesirable substances still creep into tap water from time to time. However there is very little that chlorine cannot kill, especially live contaminants.

By and large, tap water in South Africa is good and safe and relatively cheap.

Mineral water

Extracted from natural mineral springs, unless purified, and contains highish levels of sulphur, magnesium and calcium, all of which are good for you, and has a particularly unique taste. Cost, however, is a negative factor.

Spring water

Spring water emanates from natural underground water, rivers or lakes, which either gushes out spontaneously (Spring source) or is pumped out by means of boreholes.  These 2 waters are essentially the same but differ from location to location, dependent upon the type of rock and minerals it finds itself in, or travels through. both types of spring water should be filtered through micro filters to remove particles in suspension. It should be noted, however, that not all spring water is suitable for drinking. Testing spring water for correct characteristics, namely taste per mouth, feel and drinkability and of course, contaminant free, is what should be used for packaging and drinking.

Generally drinkable Spring Water tastes soft and clean and usually has the ideal PH of about 5.6 – 8. Being totally natural, it also contains many of the natural minerals found in mineral water.

Sparkling water

As the name suggests, it bubbles, as it is infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. It can also be mineralised and one can also find and drink natural sparkling water. But it is expensive

Distilled water

This is boiled, steamed and condensed back to a liquid and has no salts and minerals. There are no health benefits to humans and in fact if drunk, depletes one’s own body minerals through osmotic pressure.  It is primarily used in Industry. Best use it for your iron or car battery.

Purified water

This is usually tap or ground water which has been ‘doctored‘ with chlorine to remove harmful substances – bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Filtration systems through which water passes, is also considered purified water.

Prepared water

This is water that has gone through a reverse osmosis process and remineralised.

You choose. I’ve chosen mine and I have a SPRING in my step.

Good, better, best, butter

Science has lied to us. Have you heard that before, or rather, have you heard that recently? Well, it’s true. Science doesn’t always get it right. Without going into the motivations or agendas relating to the 180-degree about turn on the notion that “butter was bad for you”, now “it’s good for you”, the world […]
